What’s a barbecue about really? It’s a chance to catch up with mates in a relaxed, non-formal setting. It’s an opportunity for the man of the house to chuck on a dodgy apron and wave some tongs around, boasting about his (questionable) cooking prowess. And in part, it’s clearly about just having some food around so that consuming copious bottles of cheap wine and cases of beer seems less outrageous.
But in essence, it’s about eating giant quantities of food. Huge slabs of meat, handfuls of chips, a small mountain of potato salad. Good concept, really - but perhaps a little unrefined? Hence today’s deal from Maru Korean BBQ Restaurant, which takes that concept, and turns it into something far, far better. Discover barbecue at its very best with dinner for two, including a Korean beer each (don’t worry, they haven’t forgotten the beer), for only $48 (usually $128). Your supermarket sausages will look rather pathetic compared to this feast, and if you think you can put away a lot of food, here’s the meal to test it. Start small (pace yourselves people) with a cold beef brisket salad to share, followed by a generous barbecued combination to share including marinated chicken, scrumptious wagyu chuck eye roll, pork belly (ah-mazing, ‘nuff said) and short ribs. At this point, you may need to take a little breather and loosen the belt a notch or two before starting on the third course made up of your choice of an unbelievably flavoursome seafood or meat soybean paste soup, plus some seriously more-ish marinated beef to share. Full would be an understatement here... stuffed may be more appropriate. Handily located smack-bang in the CBD on Elizabeth Street, this rave-worthy restaurant is fully licensed but BYO is available for wine.
